What Is Sermorelin?

Sermorelin is a synthetic version of a short fragment of growth hormone–releasing hormone (GHRH), the signal the brain uses to prompt the pituitary gland to release growth hormone. A branded sermorelin product, Geref, was approved by the FDA in 1997 and designated an orphan drug for growth hormone deficiency in children with growth failure (FDA orphan drug listing). That product was later taken off the U.S. market, and in 2013 the FDA published a determination that it was not withdrawn for reasons of safety or effectiveness (Federal Register notice).
